NFL parlays and same-game parlays: the math you're really paying

Every NFL Sunday, parlays are the most-placed and most-lost ticket in America. They're not a scam — the math is public — but the format is engineered to feel closer to hitting than it is. Here's the honest price tag.

The vig multiplies with every leg

Each leg carries the book's margin, and multiplying legs multiplies the margins. A three-leg parlay of standard -110 bets pays +596 while true 50/50 legs would justify +700 — the gap is the compounding tax. By five or six legs, the house edge is several times what a straight bet carries.

Same-game parlays: correlation cuts both ways

SGP legs are obviously related — a QB's passing yards and his receiver's catches move together. When correlation helps you, the book reprices the payout down to account for it (that's what the SGP engine is for). When it hurts you, you carry it. The convenience is real; the pricing is not in your favor.

When a parlay is defensible

Small stakes, budgeted as entertainment, with the payout understood — fine. Legs you genuinely believe are each mispriced — then a parlay amplifies a real edge, though it also amplifies variance. What's never defensible is parlaying big favorites 'because they all should win': that's maximum vig on minimum payout.

Watch your own parlay ledger

The pattern to catch isn't one ticket — it's the season total. Most bettors who track it discover their straight bets are roughly break-even and their parlays are the entire leak. That is fixable the moment you can see it.
