NFL spreads cluster on 3 and 7: what our board and the results show

Football scores move in threes and sevens, and the spread follows. NFL lines don't sit on just any number. They gather around the margins games actually finish on, and the half point either side of those margins is where the price is decided.

Where the spreads closed

Our board recorded the closing consensus spread — the line most books quoted — for 82 NFL games from opening night to the first game of week 7. 36 of them, 43.9%, closed at 2.5, 3 or 3.5. Another 15 closed at 6.5, 7 or 7.5. Only 24 closed on a whole number at all, and two thirds of those were 3 or 7.

Where the games finished

The results lean the same way. ESPN's public scoreboard lists 94 regular-season games as final over the same stretch: 16 were decided by exactly 3 points (17.0%) and 11 by exactly 7 (11.7%), so more than a quarter finished on one of the two numbers. Seven weeks is a short run. The margin model behind our half-point calculator, fit to 6,223 regular-season games, puts the long-run share on exactly 3 at about 9% for a field-goal favorite, but the shape is the same: football piles up on 3 and 7.

How the line gets there

For the 29 games that started from 2026-10-11 on, the board also has a first capture, a median 11 days before kickoff. The favorite changed in 3 of them. In the other 26 the spread moved in 16, by a point or more in 10, and 9 of those moves landed on 3, left it or crossed it. Of the 29, one opened on 3 and five closed there.

Why the half point matters here

A spread of 3 pushes on a 3-point win; 2.5 wins it outright and 3.5 loses it. With games landing on 3 this often, that half point is worth real money: the half-point calculator puts crossing 3 at about 20 cents and crossing 9 at about 2. Books charge the same for both, which is a good deal exactly once.

  • A whole-number spread can push. 2.5 and 3.5 never do.
  • A move onto or off 3 is the biggest move a spread can make, even when it's only half a point.
  • Movement is market information, not a tip.
