How to find +EV bets by comparing odds
Every profitable bettor is chasing the same thing: positive expected value (+EV). A +EV bet is one where the price you get is better than the true odds of the outcome. Find enough of them and profit follows; the trick is estimating that "true" price.
What +EV actually means
Expected value is what a bet would return on average if you could place it many times. If a fair coin flip pays you better than even money, betting it is +EV even though you'll lose half the time. In sports, the challenge is that nobody hands you the fair odds — you have to estimate them.
The vig, and why posted odds aren't fair odds
Sportsbooks build in a margin called the vig (or juice). If both sides of a game are priced at -110, the implied probabilities add up to more than 100% — the extra is the book's cut. To find a fair price, you remove that margin, which is called "de-vigging." The result is the book's actual estimate of each side's probability, with the house edge stripped out.
Use the market consensus
One book can be off, but the consensus across many books is hard to beat. Taking the de-vigged median across several sportsbooks gives you a robust estimate of the fair probability for each side. Compare the best available price to that consensus, and the gap is your edge.
Line shopping is the easiest edge
- Different books post different numbers on the same game.
- Always taking the best price raises your effective payout on every bet.
- Over a season, the difference between average and best prices is enormous.
- A line that beats the consensus fair price is, by definition, a +EV bet.
Putting it together
Bankroll Guardian compares the best available price to the de-vigged median consensus across books and tags lines that clear a value threshold with a green +EV marker — so instead of doing the math by hand, you can see at a glance where the value is and take the best number.
