The book's edge
Palpable error (palp)
An obvious pricing mistake — a decimal point in the wrong place, two teams transposed, a stale line left up after a result — that a sportsbook's terms allow it to void rather than pay. Nearly every book reserves this right, and “palp” is the trade shorthand for invoking it.
The line between a palpable error and a merely generous price is where the arguments happen. A book posting +250 on a side trading at +200 elsewhere has offered a good price, not made an error. A book posting +2500 on that same side has made one, and will say so.
The practical consequence: a price that looks too good to be true usually is, and a win on it may simply be voided at the original stake. It is one reason chasing obvious mispricings is a poor foundation for a strategy, and measured edge against the closing line is a sturdier one.
