The puck line: why hockey's spread is always 1.5 goals
Football spreads move in half points and live or die on key numbers. Hockey's spread hardly moves at all. The puck line hands the favorite a 1.5-goal handicap and the underdog a 1.5-goal head start, and from there the price does all the work.
Every quote on our board was 1.5
Between 2026-09-24 and 2026-10-03 our board captured pre-game prices from 15 sportsbooks for 43 games scheduled between 2026-09-29 and 2026-10-10 — the last of the preseason and the first week of regular-season lines. All 1,966 pre-game puck line quotes were ±1.5. Not most of them; all of them.
So the number tells you nothing on its own. What changes from one game to the next is the price attached to it.
Same team, two prices
On the median game, the favorite was −133 on the moneyline and +162 at −1.5, and the underdog was −204 at +1.5. Asking the favorite to win by two turns an odds-on price into a long one.
As implied probabilities, −133 is 57.1% and +162 is 38.1%, both still carrying the bookmaker's margin. The difference between them is the market's estimate of how often the favorite wins by exactly one goal. On the median game it came to 35.6% of the favorite's wins: roughly one in three.
Why one-goal games are common enough to price
Two features of hockey pull results toward a one-goal margin. A team trailing late pulls its goalie for an extra skater, which can turn a one-goal lead into two — or leave it at one. And most sportsbooks grade the puck line on the final result including overtime, with a shootout winner credited one goal, so every game that goes past regulation ends as a one-goal game. House rules differ; a three-way regulation market is the version where overtime doesn't count.
Reading it as a price
- The moneyline asks who wins. The puck line asks who wins and by how much. You get a better payout on one or a lower risk on the other, never both.
- A plus price on a favorite isn't cheap because it's plus. +162 breaks even only if the favorite wins by two or more at least 38.1% of the time.
- Movement in either price is market information, not a tip.
