Shots, points and goals: how NHL player props work

Hockey props turn on small numbers. A goals line of 0.5 asks one question — does the player score at all — and a shots line of 2.5 is decided by whether the third shot comes.

The five markets on our board

Bankroll Guardian prices five NHL player prop markets across the books in our feed: points, goals, assists, shots on goal and blocked shots. Each shows the best available price for the over and the under, and logs to your record in one tap.

What a half-point line asks

  • Over 0.5 goals wins if the player scores once or more. Under 0.5 wins if the player doesn't score.
  • Over 2.5 shots on goal needs three. Two is an under. A half-point line can't push.
  • Points count goals and assists together, so a points prop moves with either.
  • Blocked shots are a defensive count: they reward the shot that never reached the net.

Why a short run says little

Our own testing found that one rating model called about 53% of NHL winners against about 65% in the NBA — hockey is the noisy league. Props built on counts of zero, one or two sit in the middle of that noise, which is why a good week of prop results says very little. At −110 a bet needs to win 52.4% of the time to break even, and telling a real 55% apart from break-even takes on the order of 1,400 settled bets.

How a prop is graded

When the game is final, Bankroll Guardian grades NHL props from the game's box score: the player's stat against your line. If the player doesn't appear in the box score, the bet stays pending rather than being graded as a loss. Sportsbooks' rules for a player who doesn't dress vary, so check your book's.
