What is Closing Line Value?
Closing Line Value (CLV) compares the price you got to the closing line — the final odds right before the event starts. Because the closing line is the market’s sharpest estimate, consistently getting a better number than the close is the strongest predictor that you’re a long-term winner.
Positive CLV means you beat the close; negative means you were behind it. One bet doesn’t prove much — it’s your CLV over time that matters. Bankroll Guardian captures the closing line and grades your CLV automatically on every bet, so you never have to do this by hand. Common questions
- What is Closing Line Value (CLV)?
- Closing Line Value measures whether you beat the market: it compares the odds you bet to the final (closing) odds just before the event started. Because the close is the market's sharpest price, consistently positive CLV is the strongest known predictor of long-term betting profit.
- How do you calculate CLV?
- CLV % = (your decimal odds ÷ closing decimal odds − 1) × 100. Example: you bet +150 (2.50) and the line closed +120 (2.20): 2.50 ÷ 2.20 − 1 = +13.6% CLV. Positive means you got a better price than the close; negative means worse.
- What is a good CLV in sports betting?
- Any consistently positive average — even +1% to +3% across hundreds of bets — indicates you're reliably beating the market, and profit tends to follow. A single bet's CLV is noise; the average over a large sample is the signal.
- Why does CLV matter more than win rate?
- Win rate is dominated by variance and by the prices you bet — you can win 60% of bets and lose money on heavy favorites. CLV stabilizes far faster and measures the one thing that persists: whether you systematically get better numbers than the market's final price.
